A British startup
and its revolutionary patented authentication technology Shayype have been picked
by the UK Government’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to
showcase on its stand at this month’s International Cyber Expo 2025 event at
London’s Olympia (September 30th and October 1st).
Shayype offers
a world first - an “all on one screen” substitute for passwords, “two-step verification
codes” (sent via SMS) and multi factor authentication - via a single neat
solution that allows users to securely extract one-time passcodes (OTPs) for
each login/authorisation from numbered on-screen grid displays, which can be
securely transmitted.
It works with
or without an additional device such as a phone, meaning users can keep
connected if their phones are lost or broken - but can also be used in a
“conventional” 2FA set-up to fully comply with existing regulations if
required. It can also act as a back-up for biometric authentication systems,
enabling them to go on working even if readers fail or aren’t available.
Users set up
secret patterns when registering in much the same way passwords are created,
except that the core secret is never exposed in use, and codes are not sent as
“plain text”.
Shayype’s local
MP Sam Carling said: "It’s fantastic to see Shayype, as a local
North West Cambridgeshire business, recognised on the national stage for
developing such forward-thinking technology. Cybersecurity isn’t just a
technical issue - it underpins trust in our economy and the safety of people’s
everyday lives.
“When I first
met Shayype, it was clear that they’re bringing forward exactly the kind of
innovation we need to see more of: solutions built here in the UK that can make
a real difference globally, and bring investment from around the world right
here to benefit North West Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. I’m looking forward
to continuing to support them to grow and contribute to both our local and
national economies."
President and Founder
of Cambridgeshire-based Shayype Solutions Ltd, Jonathan Craymer added: “The
fact that DSIT has had the vision to choose us to showcase this new technology,
speaks volumes about the Government’s enthusiasm for strategic innovation, and
its desire to tackle the problem of digital identity which continues to blight both
the digital and real worlds.
“The tech giants
have done a great job creating the online world, but have completely dropped
the ball when it comes to providing a secure, easy to use way for all of us to
prove who we are, which attackers can’t capture and then reuse - as they can
with passwords, biometric information, personal data or devices.
“It’s also ridiculous
to assume our mobiles will always be to hand, whenever we need to authenticate.
As we all know, they get stolen, break, lose charge or won’t connect. That’s
why an extra ingredient that works when all else fails is so vital.”
Fellow director
John Bullard said: “In today’s hyperconnected world where digital
transformation shapes economies, industries, and individual lives, the need for
robust, user-friendly cybersecurity has never been greater.
“Shayype
represents a breakthrough in authentication technology, poised to fundamentally
re-model the global cyber landscape - making digital spaces safer, more
accessible and resilient for everyone. I believe this new ingredient technology,
underpinned by our long-established bedrock of common law, could help make the
UK a forerunner of much-needed digital trust, in the same way Greenwich became
the centre for global navigation.”
